THE VOICE OF WEST NEW YORK

WEST NEW YORK  FAMILY

What should change within the town?

I would like the parents and teachers to pay more attention to the older kids so that they stop bullying the younger ones. Also what is needed in West New York are events for the youth, in the summer there is nothing for them and that could really make a world of a difference in this community.

What concern do you have in West New York?

Many people have grown up here and so we all recognize each other like family. But Boulevard East was not like this before, I’ve had to call the police because there have been men who constantly bother young school girls here. So why wouldn’t we take care of it and worry about it? This park has such a beautiful view and we have to give it the value it deserves.

What would you like to see change in this town?

West New York really needs to make the town clean and make the buildings look better for all of us, just paint them better. Art murals could be everywhere, there’s so much space around, there’s no need to have so many advertisements. Also the town has to help out the skaters, they need to renovate the skatepark here in WNY.

What does this town mean to you?

My grandparents emigrated to America from Italy about 100 years ago in search of the American dream. They settled in West New York where they opened a small grocery store on Hudson Ave. Working hard like most immigrants they achieved their dreams, raised 4 daughters and bought a home in North Bergen. Their story lives on today. All of us searching for a better life and a legacy to leave our children.

What do you think the town needs to pay attention to?

On 62nd street there use to be a basketball court by the projects. And once the court broke down, nobody ever tried to fix it, but there’s a whole park there. We all use to go and play basketball, it use to be lit but now its dead. Now you don’t even see anyone outside because there’s nothing for the kids.

What would you like to see differently in this town?

If you look at housing, it's becoming very expensive and very scarce. Most of the empty lots are being used to build luxury housing but who maintains rent control for the rest of the neighborhood? In my case my landlord hasn’t been abusive but there are other people whose rent is raised every year by hundreds of dollars. And because the houses do not have rent control the owner can continue to increase the rent and there is no one to stop them.

How do you see this town?

I like it here because you know what it is West New York is different and even though it’s a small town there’s a lot of people here, a lot of good people and that’s hard to find.

What would you like to see the town do differently?

It definitely needs fresh new minds to lead it in a better direction. I have fought for the safety of my home and for the safety of my neighborhood but still nothing is being taken seriously. Our streets are never cleaned and security cameras will not solve gang activity. Our children deserve access to world class parks along Boulevard East. Those parks must be maintained regularly and kept secure!

CESAR

What do you think our town needs to move forward?

We have constitutional rights and we must exercise them to improve our community.

Read about Cesar’s efforts to fight for our residents’ constitutional rights to record law enforcement without fear of retaliation.

CHRISTIAN

How do you want West New York to change?

I want my town to be thriving socially and economically because my fellow citizens deserve no less. We can get there with a government that has creative ideas and shows compassion for our people.

What change do you think West New York needs?

Our youth must lead our government. We can’t expect changes with the same faces over and over again.

How hard have you fought for this community?

We treat this community like family. During Hurricane Sandy when the power was down, we bought a generator and welcomed everyone into our pharmacy. I remember the Park View towers had no power and so we decided to go over and spend some time with those families. We made some coffee, got everyone lunch, and even had breakfast the next morning. But that’s just one of many stories, that’s the community we’ve helped grow. What matters is we have people who are willing to step up in times of need. They’ve done it for us and we’ll always do it for them.

What change do you think West New York needs?

We need to start building a more diverse West New York! I’ve lived in this town for a few years now and it’s become our home. I believe diversity is our greatest strength in this town so we must use it!

LORENA

What change would you like to see in our town?

I would like to see fair order. For local businesses there is no one who maintains it and we need this in West New York. The law has to be fulfilled by all its workers, no one should be privileged or ignored. And my colleagues and I want to organize ourselves to be able to change this because we all deserve the same rights!

What change would you like to see in West New York?

I want everyone to know that our Town Hall meetings are open to everyone. As a community we need to be aware of what’s happening in our town. You’re free to voice your opinion, question, deny, approve of any resolution or policy.

What changed do you think the people need?

We need a government that considers its working class. West New York needs someone who can work next to us and speak for us.

 WEST NEW YORK HOME OWNERS

adilyoday-1.jpg

As a home-owner, how do you feel about the recent construction?

It’s unfortunate, there’s been so many buildings that have been brought up but nobody is paying attention to the residents that live here. West New York needs a fresh start, that’s for sure.

What change would you like to see in this town?

I have lived in West New York for so many years and I think we have to pay attention to our homes. Diversity is important and we need it to give affordable apartments to everyone. Many people have complained that when they have applied for the housing authority there are certain groups that are privileged, they get an apartment within less time.On the other hand, there are other groups that do not obtain it until 10-13 years after applying. I have also known cases of people who have waited so long that they never had a chance to live in them because they have died. We need help the people who depend on this opportunity in times of need.
